Reading Democrats losing Biden backup plan as primary deadlines pass

At age 81, Biden is the oldest president in U.S. history. Despite physicians attesting to his well-being, a string of incidents, including trips and falls, malapropisms, and losing his train of thought, have caused two-thirds of his own party to believe that he is too old to remain in the White House. Polling numbers in key battleground states have found former President Donald Trump leading Biden in most of them, causing a divide among Democrats between those who have no concerns about their chances to defeat Trump and those who say there is no other option than Biden.

Biden is facing a primary challenge from Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN), which many strategists and Democratic lawmakers regard as a long-shot campaign or even a mistake. If other candidates wished to enter the race, setting up a presidential campaign and raising the funds necessary to run would typically take months.

Primary ballot deadlines in several states, such as South Carolina, Georgia, and Nevada, have already passed in the last few months, placing any future Democratic candidate at a disadvantage. Deadlines in other states, such as California, Illinois, and Michigan, are approaching in the coming weeks.

Democrats could decide to pick another nominee during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August 2024, but that nominee may not have the same chances of success as Biden.

"There is no Plan B. If he were ... suddenly not to run, everyone you know would run. The VP scares no one," a senior Democrat said in an interview with Reuters.

Harris, who has insisted that Biden is fit to run for reelection and will win next November, faces her own popularity problems that could make her an insufficient candidate to run against the Republican former president. Recent polls have shown Harris hovering in the range of a 39% approval rating, 1 point lower than Biden's record-low approval rating of 40% that he hit on Nov. 1. A Reuters/Ipsos poll on Nov. 7 showed him hitting 39%, Biden's lowest rating since April.

Throughout November, fellow Democrats have cast doubt on Biden's reelection chances and whether it is good for the party. Democratic strategist David Axelrod has recently said Biden's "age issue" is hanging over him and that the president “needs to decide” if becoming the Democratic nominee "is wise." Axelrod, a former adviser to former President Barack Obama, called on Biden to "get out or get going" on his presidential campaign.

Even if Democrats were able to find a viable candidate to replace Biden in 2024, polling shows that it would make little difference. A recent poll from Stack Data Strategy found that Trump would easily beat "possible replacements" for Biden, such as Harris or Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA). The latter has denied he is seeking a presidential run in 2024 despite building his national profile in recent months.

With Democrats' primaries beginning in February and ending in June and the convention set for August, they have little time to find an alternative to Biden that can mobilize Democratic and independent voters to defeat Trump, who is the front-runner in the Republican primary race. Even if Harris and Newsom were jockeying for the nomination, it would be an uphill battle to convince over 4,000 delegates to select them. Some California Democrats said Newsom would cede to Harris in the event that the nomination came down to the two of them.

Still, Democrats are largely united behind the president, and Biden is expected to win the Democratic nomination regardless of concerns over his electability. He holds a significant lead over Phillips and candidate Marianne Williamson, with FiveThirtyEight giving the president an average of 67.7% compared to Williamson's 7% and Phillips's 4.2%.

"Joe Biden will be the Democratic nominee and he will beat whichever [Make America Great Again] extremist the Republicans put forward,” Biden campaign spokesman Daniel Wessel said to the international news outlet.
