"Give me six lines written by the hand of the most honest man, I'll find enough to hang him," Cardinal Richelieu This is Orwellian tyrant talk Besides the hypocrisy of the power elites being anything but transparent themselves, we must resist the digital panopticon for many reasons. Not least because it is simply not true that “if you have nothing to hide you should not be afraid”. As I have reported previously, even the UK Government’s own “Surveillance Commissioner” admits this: Of the many arguments deployed in the defence of surveillance technology there is one that doesn’t just miss the point: it misses all of them. Beguilingly simple, the expression “if you’ve done nothing wrong you’ve nothing to worry about” is, of course, not the answer to legitimate public concern over surveillance; it’s not even an answer. There are many reasons why - the absence of logical merit, ethical legitimacy and legal validity being but three. Yet the argument still seems to find support in repetition. A tragic example of the argument’s terrible consequences can be seen in the recent case of the wrongly convicted Post Office workers, some of whom had sadly died before eventually convincing the State that they’d ‘done nothing wrong’. Here then are 5 reasons for abandoning the argument once and for all: 1 Presumption of Guilt. Let’s begin with the need for rebuttal. The argument requires you to prove you’ve done nothing wrong. This reverses our constitutional safeguard of the presumption of innocence until the State has proven guilt to the relevant standard and instead passes the burden of proof to the individual. Moreover, it puts the individual in the notoriously difficult position of having to prove a negative (e.g. “I’m not dishonest”). 2 (a) Database infallibility (computer says “wrong”). Dependence on a database entry means that, if the computer says you’ve done something wrong, you’ve ‘done something wrong’. If that computer is looking for indicia of criminality, the irresistible inference is that you’re a criminal. If you’re already trying to prove a negative (see Reason 1) your burden becomes exponentially harder when you have to disprove the entries on someone else’s ‘infallible’ database in order to do it. 2 (b) Database fallibility (computer is wrong). Sometimes however it’s the computer that has ‘done something wrong’. Anyone with a satnav knows this. As others have pointed out, people judged by algorithms often have to meet a standard far higher than the algorithm was itself. Confusing precision with reliability, this scenario means you must go beyond disproving an entry on someone else’s trusted database and must now discredit their system. 3 Accept or admit. The argument imposes a false dichotomy then assumes the answer, excluding anything in between. It assumes benignity in all State intrusion. However, if it’s been determined that you’ve ‘done something wrong’ in a criminal prosecution, your best tactical option at trial (even as someone who hasn’t) may nevertheless be to plead guilty. Once you do so you have admitted culpability and vindicated the argument, adding insult to ignominy. 4 Appeal to innocence. Opposing the argument is seen as self-incriminating: by resisting it you supply the corroborative evidence of ‘wrongdoing’ (in the same way as when you request a lawyer right after being told you are entitled to have one). 5 Done nothing wrong? What exactly do we mean by ‘wrong’? Does speeding count? How about ‘pulling a sickie’ or looking for loopholes in the lockdown rules? Criminologists and sociologists know how humanity errs and the “if you’ve done nothing wrong ...” argument doesn’t leave many people to be consoled by innocence. In addition, life experience shows that rules change after technology’s introduced - things that weren’t ‘wrong’ when the systems were approved now are (aka ‘function creep’ which has been shown to increase with synchronisation of State functions and databases). These developments are rarely accompanied by new rights and, if you surrendered your old ones, there aren’t any more. An alternative approach When rebuilding by the light of the embers of World War II, the architects of the society we now enjoy made sure that we can live in a mature and tolerant democracy, free from arbitrary interference from the State. Repeating the “if you’ve done nothing wrong…” mantra means you accept that privacy and freedoms of assembly, speech etc. are enjoyable, not as inalienable rights, but only at the pleasure of the State. In a democratic society governed by the rule of law isn’t it for those intruding on fundamental rights and freedoms to justify their doing so? In times of crisis the need for justification is arguably all the greater, in case we distractedly settle for a permanent lowering of the threshold in the face of temporary emergency. Of course, the power elites at the top (connected to the NSA etc.) have a huge dossier on you and me. But that doesn’t mean we just give up. That doesn’t mean we don’t do everything we can to peacefully resist their plans. One day, we may even succeed in enjoying a free and private life. Until that time comes, don’t make it easy for them. And we should celebrate our victories in this fight. For example, some of the next populist/libertarian politicians that are about to take back some control, have promised an end to the programmable-social credit linked-CBDCs. That was to be the cornerstone of the next phase of their digital panopticon. This is a great victory. We just have to keep up our sharing of quality information that exposes their plans, and the people will start making a fuss, and some politicians will listen. We can do this. Treatment of Neuropsychiatric Manifestations of Long-COVID with Empiric Acyclovir

Oral Antiviral Associated with Clinical Improvement and Reductions in Antibody Titers PETER MCCULLOUGH, MD JAN 27 By Peter A. McCullough, MD, MPH The US HHS Biden Administration Long-COVID research program has spent $1B tax payer dollars and yielded zero new drugs, protocols, or ideas of how the clinical community can manage the plethora of patients with post acute sequelae after SARS-CoV-2 infection. This report from German et al caught my attention. Four cases were seen in a psychiatry office all with well documented neuropsychiatric manifestations of long-COVID syndrome including delirium, seizures, dissociative and encephalopathic symptoms. Each case was treated with oral acyclovir, presumptively for either persistent SARS-CoV-2 replication or systemic reactivation of an endogenous virus. Acyclovir is active against Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), HSV-2, Varicella zoster virus (VZV), Herpesvirus simiae (B-virus), and to a lesser degree Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). The rationale is given by the authors: Acyclovir acts by competitively inhibiting DNA polymerase through phosphorylation of the drug compound [14,15]. Acyclovir is now also being proposed to act by preventing the binding of IL-12 to the IL-12 receptor. This is promising for the treatment of COVID-19 by treating the high levels of serum cytokines, inhibiting the cytokine storm inflammatory response [16]. The use of acyclovir is FDA-indicated for the treatment of herpes zoster infections, genital herpes, varicella, and herpes simplex virus encephalitis [17,18]. Acyclovir has been used to treat COVID-19, with proven efficacy, safety, and low cost in small-scale studies [15]. In each case after several months of therapy, there was clinical and serologic evidence of viral clearing. Large prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials are required to make therapeutic claims and strong treatment recommendations. However, the next time I see a patient who falls into this syndromic category, I am going to consider this safe and widely available generic medication for an empiric trial of acyclovir 400 mg three times daily. Extracurricular by Tembe Denton-Hurst (the author of Homebodies; presently at the top of my TBR pile). Her book recs (and longer reviews) are fantastic. Of her best books of the year list, I ordered five (I had already bought two). I just finished reading What Napoleon Could Not Do on her rec and it was excellent. Michelle Armas at Anthropologie! Michelle Armas is one of my favorite artists (I LOVE her work and have one of her original pieces) and I actually screamed when I saw that she teamed up with Anthropologie to design a print for this skirt. I have never hit order so quickly. There was a shirt as well but it doesn’t seem to be on the website anymore. What I Watched This Week: (this was more of a reading week and I was out more than usual) Movies: I watched Nest on Netflix. It was showing in new releases. Jude Law? Carrie Coon? Yes please! It was positioned as a thriller but truthfully it was boring and depressing. Skip it! TV: I watched the first three episodes of Funny Woman (PBS, via Amazon Prime); it's entertaining so far. According to a Facebook post from the BVFD, on Friday at around 4:48 p.m., crews with the department were alerted to a possible vehicle fire on U.S. Route 48. While Deputy Chief Hart was traveling to the scene on Serpell Avenue, it is believed that he suffered from a medical emergency that left him unconscious and caused his vehicle to drift off of the road and into a nearby tree head-on. When crews arrived on the scene of the crash, they found Deputy Chief Hart heavily entrapped in his vehicle. Crews with the BVFD helped to get him out and he was then flown to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown to be treated for severe injuries and is currently in the O.R. The BVFD said that Deputy Chief Hart has served as a firefighter for more than 50 years and asks that the community keep him and his family in their thoughts in prayers. The accident happened Thursday, Jan. 25, in the 9700 block of Old Statesville Road. According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, the driver of school bus No. 1967 suffered a medical emergency, resulting in the minor accident. No other cars were involved. CMS said 22 students from Croft Community School were on the school bus. Medic said initial information indicates that five people sustained minor injuries. So far, no one has been transported to the hospital by Medic for treatment. 'Disturbing' Collusion Between Biden White House and Trump Prosecutors

An explosive defense motion filed in the classified documents case detailed extensive collaboration between prosecutors and top Biden officials to get Trump. But what does Jack Smith want to hide? JULIE KELLY JAN 27 Before the appointment of Special Counsel Jack Smith in November 2022, Joe Biden’s Department of Justice was in the process of conducting two separate criminal investigations into Donald Trump: his attempts to “overturn” the 2020 election and his alleged mishandling of sensitive government files. Smith took over both matters to demonstrate the DOJ’s “independence” from politics, the public was told, although he took with him prosecutors and investigators already assigned to the existing inquiries. His team continues to insist their work is devoid of any influence from or cooperation with the Biden regime. Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland say the same. But as Smith prepares for trial in Washington and southern Florida, defense attorneys have uncovered a stunning trove of evidence that contradict claims that the Biden White House had nothing to do with the unprecedented federal prosecution of a former president and Biden’s GOP rival in the 2024 general election. Emerging evidence also shows collaboration between White House officials and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ office related to her RICO indictment against Trump and several associates. Key Biden Officials in Cahoots from Day One According to a lengthy defense motion filed January 16 in the classified documents case in Florida, the “disturbing” collusion extended beyond Biden’s in-house lawyers and involved multiple government agencies dating back to January 2021. Those agencies include the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), the National Security Council, the FBI’s Counterintelligence division, the intelligence community, the Secret Service, and the Department of Energy. Defense attorneys representing Trump and his two co-defendants Waltine Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira used Freedom of Information Act requests to obtain 155 pages of communications between government officials, which are attached in heavily redacted form to the defense motion. (Judge Aileen Cannon, as customary, issued a protective order early in the case that required both sides to file sensitive materials under seal until she can determine whether to unseal them.) “The FOIA releases, coupled with other evidence scattered throughout more than 1.2 million pages of discovery, reflect close participation in the investigation by NARA and Biden Administration components such as the White House Counsel’s Office, as well as senior officials at DOJ and FBI. These revelations are disturbing but not surprising,” the attorneys wrote. Perhaps most disturbing, and not “surprising” but jaw-droppingly shocking, is it appears the DOJ has misrepresented the origins of the classified documents investigation. The DOJ claimed the FBI opened an investigation into Trump’s mishandling of classified files in March 2022 only after the National Archives discovered papers with “classified markings” contained in 15 boxes of materials Trump turned over to the agency in January 2022. But correspondence indicates that Biden’s White House Office of Records Management and NARA’s general counsel discussed what defense attorneys described as “exaggerated claims related to records handling under the [Presidential Records Act]” shortly after Biden took office. One redacted passage seems to indicate that NARA drafted a criminal referral related to an alleged violation of the Presidential Records Act and notified Biden’s DOJ months before the archives received the 15 boxes and at the same time Trump’s representatives were working with the archives on which files to return. A redacted portion of the motion referred to “Deputy White House Counsel Jonathan Su,” apparently in regard to Su’s communications with NARA’s general counsel in the fall of 2021. Another passage cited unknown actions taken by “the Biden administration” after an email exchange with NARA’s lawyer. A Timeline That Contradicts the Official Narrative The paper trail also confirms that NARA communicated with Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, a longtime Obama loyalist appointed by Biden to essentially run the DOJ, before the criminal referral was officially transmitted by the NARA inspector general on February 9, 2022. “In January 2022, NARA communicated with White House Counsel and senior DOJ officials regarding the 15 Boxes, and then acted at the direction of those components by providing details to NARA-OIG, the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community, and the FBI,” the defense attorneys wrote. One email shows NARA contacted Thomas Windom, an assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, one week before the referral was sent to the DOJ, asking to arrange a call to discuss the “Potential Destruction of Presidential Records.” Windom is now Jack Smith’s lead prosecutor in the January 6/2020 election case. Before the FBI reportedly opened the investigation, Biden White House officials were in constant communications with NARA. In a text sent to a colleague on February 28, 2022, William Bosanko, NARA’s chief operating officer, said “the 15 boxes from mar-a-lago (sic) had consummed (sic) all of our discussions” with the White House. Defense attorneys also want records related to attempts by Biden’s Department of Energy, run by hyper-partisan Jennifer Granholm, the former Democratic governor of Michigan, to retroactively terminate Trump’s security clearance. A memo still under seal dated June 28, 2023 indicates the Energy Department “sought to ‘modif[y]’ the inconvenient truth that the agency possessed records showing that President Trump still maintained a security clearance,” defense attorneys wrote. The memo was written three weeks after Smith indicted Trump for unlawfully retaining national defense information. “[Evidence] of post-presidential possession of a valid security clearance between 2021 and 2023 also supports potential arguments, which President Trump is entitled to explore based on existing evidence, concerning good-faith and non-criminal states of mind relating to possession of classified material.” Defense attorneys also want records that explain the involvement of the intelligence community; Biden appointed Avril Haines, another Obama loyalist and close friend of Monaco’s—Haines, Monaco, and former National Security Advisor Susan Rice are often described as “Obama’s sisters”—the director of national intelligence in early 2021. Haines and Monaco helped concoct the Trump-Russia election collusion hoax in 2016. Now Haines is overseeing the “classification review” of all documents seized at Mar-a-Lago. Letters, Meetings With Fulton County Prosecutors While the Biden regime worked behind-the-scenes to initiate the classified documents case—after all, Biden appointee Merrick Garland personally approved the unprecedented FBI raid of Mar-a-Lago, a decision that involved other political appointees—White House officials at the same time were collaborating with Willis’ ongoing investigation into the 2020 election. Records show Nathan Wade, Willis’ alleged lover retained by her office and paid at least $640,000 for his work on the Trump prosecution team, met with Biden White House officials twice in 2022, including the same day Garland announced the special counsel appointment. During a court hearing on Thursday in Fulton County for defendant Jeffrey Clark, a prosecutor further admitted that Willis’ office received two letters from the White House counsel. While the prosecutor claimed the correspondence pertained to “logistics and procedures” related to potential witnesses, Judge Scott McAbee sounded skeptical. He ordered the letters filed under seal so he can review in private. Smith, for his part, also wants several documents to remain under wraps. Claiming the defense motion is “replete with mischaracterizations and baseless arguments.” Smith asked Judge Cannon to continue to seal key exhibits including the draft criminal referral composed in 2021; the identity of an agent from “FBI Headquarters” who attended the pre-raid meeting on August 1, 2022; and testimony that apparently refutes Smith’s allegations that Trump aides moved boxes to evade FBI detection. He asked for heavy redactions on at least two dozen other documents. Cannon, unlike her judicial counterpart in Washington, is unlikely to consent to Smith’s every demand. She has unsealed filings that Smith sought to keep under seal and early in the process indicated her preference to make court documents public with special exceptions. If Cannon permits the unsealing of most of the exhibits the defense filed, the Biden White House will have another major crisis on its hands. Both Trump and his attorney railed at the judge after the verdict, with Trump calling it “absolutely ridiculous,” a violation of his First Amendment rights, and part of the Biden-directed legal warfare to “get Trump.” His attorney said the judge found Trump guilty before they entered the courtroom and refused to allow her to introduce any evidence in his defense. Trump persuades British Tories to betray their country The MAGA threat to national security

LOL ! This guy is so full of himself ! Believe me when I say I could jump on my high horse and denounce Donald Trump. Nothing would be easier than to go on (and on) about his racism and brutality, his corruption and misogyny. I could cry with polemical indignation about how he encourages insurrection, tells lies without end, and presents a clear threat to American democracy. Of course I could. I could do it in my sleep. Instead of moralising, however, I want to offer a factual proposition no fair-minded person can contradict. Donald Trump is a threat to European security. No patriotic European conservative – or patriot of any other political persuasion –can support his return to power Trump and his followers see NATO as a globalist plot by elite warmongers to suck America into paying for Europe’s defence, and their ideology is already having consequences. At Trump’s instigation Republicans in Congress are blocking US aid to Ukraine. At first, observers thought it was just a negotiating tactic. Republicans would get tougher controls on the US border with Mexico in return for agreeing to Biden's aid package. But Trump does not want a deal. Compromise would help Biden, which he has no intention of doing, and it would help Ukraine, and he won’t do that either. If Trump wins, the US deterrent will vanish. If Russia attacks, there will be no guarantees that the US will respond, and Russia will know that. The UK and the EU will face a full-scale military crisis. Conservatives, who say that national security is their first concern, simply cannot endorse Trump without making a nonsense of their lives. Yet a nonsense is what they are making. The worst Conservatives are now prepared to put love of radical right ideology before love of country. Boris Johnson is to the fore. He declared that “a Trump presidency could be just what the world needs”. And even I was faintly shocked by this treacherous performance. Many of us who opposed Johnson, thought that, say whatever else we liked about him, he had shown courage and principle in his willingness to defend Ukraine after the Russian invasion. Now he is prepared to abandon it. Johnson covers his betrayal by wailing that “I simply cannot believe that Trump will ditch the ­Ukrainians”. It’s a worthless caveat given that Trump has said he will ditch the Ukrainians, and his supporters in Congress are indeed ditching the Ukrainians at this very moment. At no point did Johnson discuss the consequences for NATO of a Trump victory. Or warn that the UK’s Conservative government may soon need to stop thinking about lowering taxes and start thinking about increasing defence spending. Share Instead, and tellingly, Johnsondelighted in the discomfort Trump provoked in the “global wokerati”. Like so many others, Johnson is prepared to throw away Ukraine’s security and to betray the security interests of his own country for the greater good of owning the libs. Reading through the work of the pro-Trump British Conservatives one learns that hatred of progressives is their alpha and omega. They would rather see the smile spread on Vladimir Putin’s face at the news of Trump’s r​eelection than concede an inch of ground to Western progressives. Lord (David) Frost, whom Johnson appointed to negotiate the UK’s disastrous departure from the EU, was explicit on this point. In a Telegraph opinion piece that read like a love letter, Frost began by confessing his loathing of rich American liberals, who apparently believe in forcing people to use less energy and eat less meat in the interests of restricting greenhouse gas emissions. Their environmentalism may seem a mild source of irritation but it was enough to send Frost careering to the far right. (And Trump is “far right” in the proper sense of the label because he threatens democracy.) Trump’s viciousness and his sadistic desire to humiliate all who cross him is alchemised in Frost’s mind into an endearing “brashness” and “indifference to convention”. Frost has no condemnation to make of the incitement to insurrection and all the other charges against Trump. On the evidence of his writing, His Lordship cares nothing for the fate of Europe should Trump win again. Instead, Frost displays the ghoulish admiration of the wimpy kid for the muscle-bound bully. He thrills to “Trump’s humour, [and] his one-liners, cheap though they are sometimes.” He confesses “I’d love to hear it if he were ever to come up with a nickname for Keir Starmer.” There you have it. Frost’s hatred of the left is so deep, nothing else matters. Not American or Ukrainian or British security. Nothing at all. As long as the playground bully can land his punches, the weaselly boy egging him on will clap his hands in delight. In the coming months the urge to go along with the right-wing gang will consume many British and European conservatives. In a rare moment of lucidity Frost spat out the reason why. Biden and Starmer are worse than anything the right and indeed far right can offer. Progressives may look moderate, Frost says. But, once in power, “you just might find they turn out to be a woke diversity obsessional, a believer in open borders, an open-the-spending-taps socialist”. Paranoid fear and irrational hatred justify abandoning the defence of your country. It was said of the worst of the French right in the 1930s that it would rather see Hitler invade than the left in power. Today the worst of the British right would rather see Putin’s forces advance on Kyiv than a Democrat in the White House. I cannot overemphasise how the seductions of extremism are luring at least some British Conservatives from their traditions. We could be about to witness a reversal of the pattern of the late 20th century. In the 1980s I along with many other leftists became a passionate supporter of unilateral nuclear disarmament. We thought we had good reasons – just as today’s Conservatives do. The Cold War was heating up. The United States and the Soviet Union were pouring medium-range weapons into Europe. It looked as if they were preparing for a “limited” nuclear war that would have reduced the continent to ashes. Although there were communists and Soviet agents in the anti-nuclear movement, most people had honest concerns. And yet our solution threatened the security of the country. The left of the 1980s proposed that the UK should remove all US bases and decommission its own nuclear weapons – while asking nothing of the Soviet Union in return. Upgrade to paid To most people watching us, we seemed insane. The UK should disarm without getting concessions from Moscow? How did that ​work? We looked as if we were collaborating with Moscow, and that hint of treason killed the movement and the wider left. When Neil Kinnock led the Labour party in the 1980s, he spent years trying to persuade it to abandon unilateral disarmament. He knew that Margaret Thatcher could use many arguments to justify her cruel rule. And defence was always high among them. Labour would leave the country defenceless, Conservatives said. It would aid the UK’s enemies because it hated Western society more than it hated the Kremlin. Now in an irony​ of history it is the right who look like the leftists of the last century. Conservatives (or as I must keep reminding myself to say the worst Conservatives) hate progressivism as we hated Thatcherism and Reagani​sm. For them, as it was for us, it is better to endanger their country and please the Kremlin than make the smallest concession to their domestic opponents. If the right does not make a decisive break with Trump, it is at least possible to imagine that it will suffer the fate of the left of the 1980s. Also, "The Kugelmass Episode," by Woody Allen MATT TAIBBI AND WALTER KIRN JAN 27 Matt Taibbi: All right. Welcome to America This Week. I’m Matt Taibbi. Walter Kirn: And I’m Walter Kirn. Matt Taibbi: Walter, how are you doing? Walter Kirn: Very well. It’s springtime in Montana, which means it’s over 20 degrees and kind of rolling into the air. All the New Year’s resolutions have fallen by the wayside. Back to reality. Matt Taibbi: What were your resolutions? Were you exercising? Were you foregoing some bad habit? Walter Kirn: I was foregoing everything basically. I decided to just quit everything that I did habitually and start over. And at this point in life, I’m down to very few bad habits. Matt Taibbi: Really? Walter Kirn: Yeah, I am, man. I’ve seen the wages of sin in every respect at this point in life. Matt Taibbi: That’s really interesting. Because I’m basically nothing but bad habits at this point. Have my family and then there’s just bad habits. Walter Kirn: Right. Right. Right. Matt Taibbi: Yeah. Walter Kirn: Yeah. It’s like Mark Twain’s thought on dieting was that you should eat whatever you want and let it fight it out in your stomach. That’s been my dietary rule for most of life. But I basically bought this cleanse kit from some online influencer. It was a bunch of supplements and protein powder packets and so on, that would substitute for an actual human diet. And I haven’t actually completely bailed on it. I’m still doing it, but I feel like hell. Matt Taibbi: Really? Walter Kirn: Yeah. Yeah. As my body loses its toxins, it’s also losing its structure. My bones ache, everything feels terrible. I can’t sleep. And my wife tells me that’s the toxins leaving my body, but I said, “If the toxins leave my body entirely, I might become ghostly.” And so maybe next week I’ll have turned the corner. How about you, Matt? How are you doing? Matt Taibbi: I’m good. I’ve been struggling to finish something for, I don’t know, four weeks now, so it’s dominated my life. I’m hoping it actually comes out today. It’s a long story. I don’t want to get into it. Walter Kirn: Okay. Matt Taibbi: But I get very unhappy when I’m not finished with something, and so my mood progressively decreases as that process continues. But I am enjoying this sort of being back in the campaign flow, and even though I didn’t go out to New Hampshire this time, which is kind of a disappointment. I’m going to be going back out to South Carolina soon. Looking forward to that. It was fun the other night watching the returns come in. Walter Kirn: Yes, it was. Matt Taibbi: It was interesting. Looking at the reactions, I thought basically there would be stories saying that everybody won, but there were really no big winner stories in response. There was a lot of other stuff. So this is one of a bunch of stories that are currently in the news, and maybe by tomorrow this won’t be a thing. But at the moment, let’s just read the story. “Supreme Court allows border control agents to remove razor wire Texas installed at Mexico border.” Let’s read the lead from Lawrence Hurley. By the way, did you see that Ben Collins left NBC? Walter Kirn: Oh, voluntarily? Matt Taibbi: Yeah. I haven’t heard the full story. That’s an interesting... We have to do a proper obit at some point on that one. Walter Kirn: Okay. Matt Taibbi: Lawrence Hurley writes, “A closely divided Supreme Court on Monday allowed border control agents to cut through or move razor wire Texas installed on the U.S-Mexico border as part of the state’s effort to prevent illegal border crossings. The court on a five 5 to 4 vote granted an emergency request filed by the Biden administration, which had argued that Texas was preventing agents from carrying out their duties.” You can see there’s a quote down here about safety. Let’s see. “It’s impossible to say what might’ve happened if border control had had its former access to the area, including through its surveillance trucks that assisted in monitoring monitoring the area.” Blah, blah, blah. “Rather than helping to reduce irregular migration, the State of Texas only made it harder for frontline personnel to do their jobs and to apply consequences under the law.” Then just quickly. This is interesting. The actual Supreme Court order is just this. “The application to vacate injunction presented to the Justice Alito and by him referred to the court as granted. The December order is vacated.” And then lists who did it. Now, we’re going to get in a second to this, which is Governor Abbott’s response. But first of all, Walter, why does this story matter? Walter Kirn: Well, the issue over the razor wire can be, I guess, confined to the issue of the razor wire. It doesn’t speak generally to Texas’s efforts to secure the border itself using the National Guard. It only speaks to this particular technique of putting up razor wire. And it was only argued that this technique is in some ways an obstacle to Border Patrol agents. Weekend Listening: The Right Way to Fight Illiberalism Christopher Rufo and Yascha Mounk debate.

In the past few months, many people were shocked to see the moral rot that has taken hold inside American universities. For example, they were surprised to learn that: A tenured Columbia professor praised Hamas’s terrorist attack on Israel as “awesome.” At UC–Irvine, a professor said “the Zionists have been exposed for the criminals and bloodthirsty animals that they are. This is a gift from Allah to the world.” At Virginia Tech, a professor said Hezbollah terrorism is just “a form of anti-imperialism that unfortunately the Western left shies away from too much.” And as Francesca Block of The Free Press reported this week, an NYU adjunct professor told students at The New School “we know it’s not true” that Hamas committed rape and beheaded babies on October 7. He even jokes about being antisemitic. I could go on and on. We’ve covered many of these stories at The Free Press. As antisemitism has spread at our universities, many started asking how this could happen when campuses are famously sensitive to microaggressions. How could schools that provide students emotional support animals and cry closets allow this kind of thing? Perhaps DEI—diversity, equity, and inclusion—wasn’t actually about those words, but about something else. It’s about replacing the principles of good-faith debate and truth-seeking scholarship with an illiberal orthodoxy that puts a premium on identity over ideas. Well now, it seems, people have finally had enough. States are second-guessing DEI’s place on college campuses and beyond. On January 1, a Texas law shutting down DEI offices at all state colleges went into effect. In Utah, Governor Spencer Cox—just three years after championing DEI—now rails against colleges that mandate faculty and staff sign diversity statements as a condition of employment. The University of Utah has since eliminated all diversity statements and questions in its hiring process. In fact, lawmakers in more than a dozen red states have either passed or proposed higher education reform packages that curtail DEI initiatives. Among them, of course, is Florida, which passed the Stop Woke Act nearly two years ago. Although a court placed part of that law on hold, the State Board of Education this month approved rules that limit public funding of DEI on college campuses. Our guests on this episode of Honestly, Christopher Rufo and Yascha Mounk, say the DEI ideological overhaul has consumed our schools for quite some time. The question now is: What should we do about it? Those are not questions with simple answers, and certainly not ones on which Christopher and Yascha agree. Christopher is a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, a board member at New College of Florida, and maybe the country’s most influential conservative activist and biggest cheerleader of Florida’s Stop Woke Act. He thinks that using the power of the law to stop DEI is essential. Yascha, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and an international affairs professor at Johns Hopkins University, is on the other side of the political spectrum. While he thinks that DEI—and woke ideology more broadly—is concerning, he doesn’t think the answer to its illiberalism should come in the form of bans and legislation. Christopher and Yascha both recently published books that investigate the changing cultural trends of the American left. Christopher’s book is America’s Cultural Revolution: How the Radical Left Conquered Everything. And Yascha is the author of The Identity Trap: A Story of Ideas and Power in Our Time. What I appreciate about this debate on Honestly is that while each has a different perspective, they don’t dismiss each other’s arguments (well, mostly anyway). I talked to them about how we arrived at this new doctrine on power, identity, and justice, and what the right way forward should be. Below are some highlights from our debate, but you can listen to the full version of the conversation here: The Right Way to Fight Illiberalism: Christopher Rufo and Yascha Mounk Debate The Free Press Episode On how to describe DEI’s capture of higher education: Bari Weiss: Some people call it wokeness, which sort of automatically brands you as being on the right. Other people call it critical theory or identity politics or postmodern neo-Marxism. There’s a lot of disagreement about how we actually describe this thing that all of us are witnessing. So I want to start there. What is it that we’re actually talking about? Christopher Rufo: I think it’s an ideological syndrome. So it’s a cluster of traits, ideas, concepts, narratives, and bureaucratic arrangements that have really revolutionized American society over the past 50 years. I trace the immediate origins back to the year 1968, and the argument that I make in my book, America’s Cultural Revolution, is that all of the ideas from the radical left of that era—the late 1960s, early 1970s—have infiltrated universities and then started to move laterally through bureaucracies in the state sector, in K–12 education, in HR departments, and even the Fortune 100 companies. And what you see over the course of this process is some very kind of multisyllabic, complex ideological concepts from the originators of these ideas in that period. And now they’ve filtered out through bureaucratic language, through euphemisms, to become what we now know as DEI. That’s the ultimate bureaucratic expression of these ideologies. You can call it—any of those labels that you just suggested, I think, are correct in general, at least facets of this ideology. But at this point, it’s not just an idea. It’s actually an administrative, cultural, and bureaucratic power that has manifested itself and entrenched itself as a new, let’s say, hegemonic cultural force in American life. Yascha Mounk: I think the best way to boil down the ideas of this ideology is in three propositions. Number one, that identity categories like race, gender, and sexual orientation are the key prism for understanding society. But to understand how we talk to each other today, or to understand who won the last election, or to understand how political revolutions happen, you have to look at things like race, gender, and sexual orientation. Number two, that universalist values and neutral rules, like those enshrined in the United States Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, are just meant to pull the wool over people’s eyes, that they actually were always designed to perpetuate forms of racist and sexist discrimination, that as Derrick Bell, the founder of critical race theory, claimed, America in the year 2000 remained as racist as it had been in 1950 and 1850. And third, which follows rather needlessly if you grant the first two premises, that therefore, in order to make any kind of progress in our society, we have to rip up those universal rules and aspirations and make how we all treat each other, and how the state treats all of us, explicitly depend on the kind of identity group into which we are born. I think if you understand that that is the core of the ideology, what you call it is less important. On whether it’s accurate to say cultural Marxism is taking place: YM: I think where we probably have genuine disagreements is in the extent to which it’s helpful to think of this ideology as being Marxist. So, Chris, correct me if I’m wrong: I think you would refer to it sometimes as a form of cultural Marxism. So the idea, broadly speaking, is that you take, sort of, the Marxist political ideology—you take out the class and you sort of put in identity categories like race and gender and sexual orientation. And broadly speaking, you get the ideas we’re talking about. I think that’s wrong for a number of reasons. First, because I just don’t think that there’s very much left of Marxism when you take out the economic categories. It’s a little bit like saying “when you take the bat out of baseball.” You’ve just gotten rid of too much for it to be meaningful. Secondly, because of the history of the thinkers who really do, I think, make up this tradition. Michel Foucault joins the French Communist Party, which very much is listening to Moscow in 1950, but he leaves it in 1953 in disgust. Derrick Bell says he barely read any Marx in college, and after that he never had time. The people he really read were people like [W.E.B] Du Bois and others. And when you go back to the core thinkers of the Marxist tradition, to Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels and the Frankfurt School and others, they simply don’t help you understand contemporary progressive politics. Then, of course, the thing we haven’t really mentioned, the idea of intersectionality, which comes to be interpreted as the claim that if you stand at [a] different intersection of identities than me, then I really can’t understand you, and I just have to defer my political judgment to you. That comes out of Kimberlé Crenshaw. And that, I think, is an area where we have a genuine intellectual disagreement. CR: I personally don’t use the term cultural Marxist that Yascha has done. I don’t do so in the book, although I think that the basic concept, if we leave the moniker aside, is that Marxism—the basic categorical distinctions—moved away from a purely orthodox materialist science or material determinism toward entities of culture, family, law, in a kind of Gramscian direction. [Herbert] Marcuse was a Marxist, and he was the most influential philosophical figure of the New Left, which is the prototype of the radical left we see today. His doctoral student, Angela Davis, was a member of the Communist Party, is a devoted Marxist, and really took the Marxist tradition and applied it to racial categories. Then within academia, most notably her long career at UC–Santa Barbara, and then her mentees, the third generation, were the founders of Black Lives Matter. They said themselves, “we are trained Marxists.” If you read a law review article written by one of the BLM founders, if you listen to their interviews and speeches, and then if you listen to their interviews with Angela Davis, they make very clear: “we are mobilizing along racial lines. We think that that’s the best rhetorical approach to score political victories. But the ultimate goal is the abolition of capitalism.” And you see this absolutely everywhere: in training programs and academic work, and even critical race theory. On what’s at stake in the Marxism argument. And if DEI is Marxist, why do Fortune 500 companies employ it? BW: But tell me what’s at stake, actually, in this argument, because I could go with both sides of the argument. But for the average person who’s looking at this ideology and just saying “This is bad. I look at the way that it segregates Americans. I look at the anti-Americanism all over it. I look at the anti-capitalism that’s definitely explicit in large parts of it, and I just think it’s bad.” And then they hear the two of you having a disagreement about whether it’s Marxist or not. They might wonder, why does it really matter in the end, if we can all agree that it’s a bad thing and that it’s bad for America? CR: What I think is really at stake—I think in Yascha’s interpretation, it appears to be this cerebral, abstract intellectual problem within academia. And if we can only have the right ideas and engage in debate, then the great ideas will win, and then the bad ideas will decay, and then everything will be fine. But if you take seriously the written words over the course of a half-century of these political objectives, of these thinkers and their activists, who have certainly seized territory in many, many institutions, you’re going to say it’s not just an intellectual debate. In fact, they want to, as critical race theorists have written, eliminate First Amendment protections for any speech they deem harmful, for any speech they deem racist. They want to eliminate the right to individual equality, as codified in the Fourteenth Amendment and the 1964 Civil Rights Act, and have a system of racial categorization and a racial spoils system in which power, privilege, wealth, and property are redistributed along the lines of racial identity. And they want to abolish the system of free enterprise, free markets, entrepreneurial capitalism that has created a massive blessing, not just for the United States but all over the world, and have it all run by a quote, unquote, “anti-racist bureaucracy.” And I think what is really at stake is: if you value the right to free speech, if you value the right to private property, if you value the right to be treated equally as an individual, if you value the United States Constitution—that’s what’s at stake. YM: One of the things that you cannot understand if you think of these ideas as Marxist, is why it is that Fortune 500 companies have proven so willing to adopt them? Why is it that corporate DEI trainings have so easily been able to incorporate these ideas? They certainly never incorporated the ideas of Karl Marx. Diversity training certainly never said, “the true nature of American society is capitalists exploiting workers, and you should form a union and go on strike.” That certainly would not be conformable with what a Fortune 500 company would allow its diversity trainers to say. So why is it that they are willing to have people come in and talk this kind of language? CR: Why would Fortune 100 companies do this? The answer to that is actually very important. It’s because they felt pressure from the cultural left on these kind of so-called racial equity issues. And they had already satisfied everything that they needed from the economic right: tax cuts, deregulation, free trade abroad. And so what they did is made a gamble and really a co-optation strategy. And more accurately, they were paying the tax—or really kind of like labor unions and factories in the mid-century period would pay the Mafia protection money. They adopt DEI policies for a number of reasons. One, to limit legal liability because of frivolous racial discrimination claims. Two, to buy off activist groups to leave them alone and not harass them and jeopardize their reputation. And then three, because there is internal pressure to, let’s say, “do something.” And these are the offerings that are on the table. It doesn’t mean they are Marxists. Obviously not. Similarly, no one else can decide your daily priorities. While you may sometimes have leaders direct your attention to given tasks and assignments, only you can decide which from the list of possibilities is the most urgent and important. As productivity expert David Allen likes to say, “You can do anything, but not everything.” So, you must make a choice. Your priorities define your day. As Stephen Covey advises, you might want to schedule them. How is your daily schedule going? To accomplish all that you desire, only you can decide the commitment you will make to the goals and people who make up your life. The tradeoffs are real and require you to make decisions as to how you will spend your time and resources. As Oprah Winfrey is fond of saying, “You can have it all. You just can’t have it all at once.” Where you find the time to invest in your goals, your health, your team, your family, and the myriad of other critical matters is up to you. How you balance competing interests is your decision alone. No one else can make that call. Do you like the current state of your commitments? At the end of the day, your life is a reflection of the decisions and choices only you can make. Whatever shape your life is in, it is the result of those decisions. JOHN LEAKE JAN 27 Between 1723 and his death in 1750, Johann Sebastian Bach was cantor of the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, Germany. His primary duty was composing music for Sunday services, and he did not disappoint. During this period he composed 265 cantatas, the St. Matthew Passion, and Mass in B Minor. Over the years I’ve known a few professional (classical) musicians, and they all expressed the opinion that, within the western classical tradition, Bach remains the most important and influential composer. Much of his understanding and creativity naturally followed from his extraordinary diligence. He was an extremely focused and hardworking man, even though he also managed to father 20 children with two different wives (though only 10 grew to adulthood). This morning, while perusing the papers and recorded lectures of Ralph Baric— UNC Professor of Epidemiology, Microbiology, and Immunology at UNC Chapel Hill. For over thirty years, Baric has been studying and tinkering with coronaviruses in his lab, seeking ways to make them infectious and pathogenic to humans with the purported goal of ALSO developing vaccines to counter them. I suspect there are very few people in the world who can sustain such laser focus on a subject over such a long period of time. Just one sample of his work is the following lecture that he apparently gave in 2007 titled The Synthetic Creation & Genetic Engineering of SARS. I found it fascinating, and I’d love to hear what people who have trained in virology think about it. In today’s roundup: a multiplier update; a mini-roundup of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’s sinking political prospects; the oversized New York jury verdict in the Trump defamation lawsuit; Tucker interviews Texas Governor Greg Abbot and Biden blows smoke about the border; and great news from motivated Ohio republicans who won a major culture war battle protecting kids. 🗞 THE C&C ARMY POST 🗞 🪖 OPERATION MULTIPLIER UPDATE: Yesterday we ran a multiplier for Jeanette Breen, the courageous New York midwife who was fined $300,000 for treating kids with holistic ‘vaccines’ and then reporting to the Department of Health’s vaccine registry that the kids were “vaccinated.” First of all, we blew out the fund-raiser, raising about $150,000 yesterday which covered Jeanette’s fine (New York generously offered a 50% ‘discount’ if it was paid early). I’m very proud of our C&C Army. Second, Jeanette somehow found me online yesterday, called the office, and we got connected. She said our support overwhelmed her, especially all the words of encouragement, and she was extremely grateful. She was also everything you would have hoped: smart, well-informed, patient-focused, and fully aware of what she was doing. Paraphrasing, Jeanette based her treatments on peer-reviewed science, and feels that, under the CDC’s newly-expanded definition of a “vaccine,” her scientifically-recognized naturopathic “inoculations” should have counted. Decide for yourself. Here’s the CDC’s current definition of a “vaccine:” VACCINE: A preparation that is used to stimulate the body's immune response against diseases. Vaccines are usually administered through needle injections, but some can be administered by mouth or sprayed into the nose. That’s pretty broad. I assume New York’s statutes are more specific than the CDC, but who knows? Maybe a New York lawyer should take a look at this. If there’s any wiggle room, they might file a declaratory action seeking a court to say whether parents can satisfy state vaccine mandates by giving their kids anything that satisfies the CDC’s definition of a vaccine, such as any “preparation” that “stimulates the body’s immune response.” Like maybe … vitamins? Remember to end the amount with a $2, and leave Jeanette an encouraging note! 🗞💬 WORLD NEWS AND COMMENTARY 💬🗞 🔥 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ran a gloomy story yesterday, which given the sordid circumstances carried the awkward and unfortunately suggestive headline, “Pressure on Fulton DA grows as critics seize on allegations of impropriety.” Maybe not the same kind of pressure that was growing on her before the scandal arose, but still. The sub-headline hilariously tossed in, “Willis is facing calls to step aside in Trump probe.” Probe. These guys are killing me. image.png To be honest, Fani Willis got spanked this week. Right in its lead paragraph, the AJC admitted that Fani “is at what could be the most perilous moment of her career.” It might as well have said former career. Fani Willis is a dead duck. Out of many positions she was presumably in before her affair became public knowledge, she is now in a can’t-win position. Most of the DA’s traditional democrat allies have catapulted her off Democrat Fantasy Island. Look out below! In other words, all passengers have now departed Fani’s Love Boat. Apart from her fiery Big Bethel Church tirade defending her adulterous affair from the pulpit two weeks ago, Big Fani has kept her big fat mouth sewn tightly shut. She ain’t talkin’ ‘cause she got nuthin’ to say. Her newfound verbal restraint only highlighted the deafening silence of any defense of Fani by any prominent democrats. They ain’t talkin’, neither. Normally you’d expect a flurry of democrat claims about Republican witch hunts and claims it’s all politics and so forth and et cetera. But now? Zip. It’s almost like Biden’s White House ordered everybody to keep quiet because this thing could get ugly. They are hanging Fani out to dry. They’re throwing her under the bus. They’re leaving her right in the lurch. They have given up the ship, and the SS Fani Willis is sinking fast, with only its captain left on board, a fatter, blacker, female Merrill Stubing. How fast is her Love Boat sinking? Fast. Let’s review this week’s Fani Willis timeline. On Monday, the judge in Nathan Wade’s divorce case unsealed the record. He also stayed the deposition of Fani Willis in the divorce, set to occur that day, until special prosecutor Nathan Wade – whom she hired for the high-profile Trump case – had first testified about his relationship and financial conditions himself. I watched the hearing. Contrary to breathless media reports, the judge was not helping the embattled DA. His logic in delaying her deposition was legally sound. He’s just being careful. Fani got a short stay of execution and nothing more. On Wednesday, the Democratic-controlled Fulton County Commission voted 6-1 to table an unrelated request from Fani Willis’s office to spend an astounding $611,000 request for new cars for the District Attorney’s office. On Thursday, Trump’s attorneys joined an effort to dismiss the elections crimes case brought by one of his co-defendants, who blew the original hole in her political cruise ship by alleging Willis was having a secret “romantic relationship” with her married, severely-overpaid special prosecutor Nathan Wade, and that she benefitted financially when Wade escorted her on luxury vacations. On Friday, Georgia's GOP-controlled Senate approved a hefty special investigative committee to probe DA Willis for “various forms of misconduct relating to the prosecution of cases related to the 2020 Presidential Election” amidst the tawdry revelations of her ‘improper’ affair with subordinate counsel. The resolution advertised where things are going. It said that, if Fani was in fact funding a boy toy in the Trump Case, then all Hades is going to break loose: WHEREAS, such relationship, if proven to exist, would constitute a clear conflict of interest and a fraud upon the taxpayers of Fulton County and the State of Georgia; establish grounds for District Attorney Willis's recusal from further involvement in the prosecution, potentially delaying it indefinitely and requiring the appointment of a special prosecutor at public expense; and subject District Attorney Willis and potentially others to discipline by the State Bar of Georgia or other entities… It is almost certain that “such relationship” will be “proven to exist,” not least since Fani hasn’t denied it. When she delivered her “I’m the victim here” sermon at AME Church, she never denied the discreditable relationship or any of the material allegations. Ominously, the District Attorney’s Bethel AME sermon began by admitting she “wasn’t perfect” — an unpromising start — and while the congregation was on the edge of their seats waiting for the next part, the I’m not perfect … but I didn’t do anything wrong part, Fani just said “racism.” Yikes. Anyway, the new Special Investigative Committee has subpoena power and is authorized to compel depositions and require the turnover of documents and, ominously for DA Willis and her adulterous love magnet, to “undertake such actions as may be necessary to enforce such subpoenas in cases of refusal to obey.” Fani needs a lot of lawyers. New ones. Also yesterday, Georgia State Representative Charlice Byrd filed articles of impeachment against Fani. It’s worth noting highly-skeptical Republicans hold majorities in the Georgia House and the Senate. There are a total of 22 articles of impeachment in the articles, each potentially a violation of Georgia State Code. The clock is ticking on what’s left of Fani Willis’s career in politics. She will have to resign, soon, and what’s left of the Trump case will implode soon after. 🔥 In other Trump legal news, Fox ran an appalling story yesterday headlined, “Trump ordered to pay more than $80 million in E. Jean Carroll defamation trial.” The sub-headline explained, “President Trump says he will appeal the 'absolutely ridiculous' verdicts.’” The case started when the 73-year-old plaintiff, E. Jean Carroll, had written a book alleging Trump sexually assaulted her in a Bergdorf-Goodman dressing room almost thirty years ago. Trump vigorously denied her claim, so she sued the President for defamation. (The statute of limitations on sexual assault had long since run out.) Last year, despite holes in Caroll’s story bigger than Zelensky’s bank accounts, and despite a series of inexplicable judicial decisions and a brand-new enabling statute clearly targeting Trump, the jury decided Trump was liable for defamation last year. The trial this week was the second trial, this one only to determine the amount of damages to be awarded for Ms. Carroll’s “defamation.” Yesterday the jury awarded even more than Carroll’s lawyers had asked for, somehow toting up $18.3 million in actual damages and adding $65 million more in punitive damages. Trump’s next move will be a legal motion with the archaic and slightly-bizarre title of “remittitur.” That is, a motion to reduce a “grossly excessive” jury verdict, and it happens all the time in these kinds of lawsuits. Some alert readers will no doubt recall the infamous “hot coffee” incident, where Stella Liebeck sued McDonald’s for making her hot coffee too hot, and a jury gave her a supersized $2.9 million dollars, which used to be a lot of money, back in the day. But on remittitur, the judge reduced the award to $640,000, which was still generous, but shrank the lawsuit into a happy meal-sized box and McDonald’s took the deal. Under the rules, a defendant can either take the judge’s reduced offer or appeal. More recently, and maybe more similar in some ways to Trump’s case, in a case involving alternative lifestyles and secret videotapes, Hulk Hogan sued Gawker Media in 2016 for publishing two minutes of a sordid sex tape of him grappling with Heather Clem, who at the time was married to Florida radio personality ‘Bubba the Love Sponge.’ An outraged jury sided with the wrestler and gave Hulk an eye-popping $140 million for his inconvenience. But Gawker appealed, and an appellate court reduced the monster award to $52 million; after a chapter 11 bankruptcy filing and a further appeal, Hogan and Gawker settled for “only” $32 million. So the President’s next step is filing for remittitur, which can be filed along with other post-trial motions. Given the case history, it seems unlikely the judge will help Trump much, but I’d be surprised if he doesn’t reduce the award to some extent. The judge will probably try to make it hard for Trump to decide whether to take the reduced award or appeal. After the post-trial motions, Trump can appeal the entire case, liability and damages, which the President has indicated he plans to do, in no uncertain terms: image 2.png The Carroll case is far from over, and it is unlikely to be resolved before the election. 🔥 In today’s border update, you might enjoy this interview Tucker posted yesterday with Governor Greg Abbott, who’s traveling in India on some kind of official business. image 3.png It was helpful to hear directly from Governor Abbott, who seems uncharacteristically fired-up. He pointed out that on March 5th, a new Texas law takes effect allowing any law enforcement officer in Texas to arrest people who illegally cross the border, teeing up a whole new conflict with the feds. Abbott reported that ten states so far have sent National Guard or other law enforcement to help. He also vowed to continue clamping down the border until January 20th of next year, when a new president is sworn in, and this thing can be fixed for good. The Democrats are trying to jump-start a narrative alleging Republicans and red states are “defying the law” and are therefore “anti-democratic” insurrectionists. Expect to see Biden propose a series of unworkable “compromises” before claiming that Republicans are unreasonable and it’s all their fault. For example, here’s the headline from this morning’s Politico: image 4.png Uh huh. The truth is, the border crisis began when Biden revoked three Trump-era executive orders. If he wanted to, Biden could solve the border crisis in five minutes just by re-issuing those orders or combining them into a single order if that would be more convenient. He doesn’t need Republicans. So far, despite democrats’ best efforts, the border continues to be a losing issue for Biden. You can tell because the New York Times’ website this morning didn’t include any border story, not even about Greg Abbott’s Defiance. Same for the Wall Street Journal, which managed to cram a story about the $83 million Carroll verdict onto its home page but reported nothing about the border crisis. The top story on the Washington Post’s site is something about Trump’s future plan for economic war with China — and nothing about the border. I’ll keep you posted as the story continues to unfold. 🔥 Local Spectrum News-1 in Ohio ran a terrific story yesterday headlined, “Senate overrides DeWine's veto of SAFE Act 23-9.” The counter-revolution continues. image 5.png On Wednesday, Ohio’s Republican-controlled Senate voted 23-9 to blow past Republican Governor Mike DeWine’s veto of a long-overdue law banning gender surgery and hormone therapy, limiting “mental health” indoctrination of transgender kids, and banning biological boys from all girls’ sports from kindergarten through college. There’s a grandfather clause — sorry, grandperson clause — allowing kids already in treatment to continue. I think Spectrum News thought this was a helpful personal interest anecdote, but the article quoted the horrifying story of Kat Scaglione, who has three kids. Kat, an “artist,” has one biological daughter and two biological sons — both of whom identify as girls. Coincidentally. But to sane folks, Kat’s story is the exact reason why the new law is so necessary. According to the article, the Scagliones are considering moving out of Ohio. They haven’t made up their minds yet, nor did they say where they would prefer to go. Maybe Portland? Have a wonderful weekend!
