Navy celebrates 235th birthday.
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - The U.S. Navy celebrated its 235th birthday on Wednesday with flyovers at Naval Air Station Oceana.
The flyovers featured old and new aircraft. The Corsair and Super Hornets were the crowd pleasers.
Top military brass talked about the missions of the Navy through the years and how technology has enhanced naval aviation.
"Naval aviators have grown from flying those small airplanes to flying in space to flying high speed jet aircraft off aircraft carriers, and of course our helicopters and patrol aircraft are doing magnificent work globally," said Richard O'Hanlon with Naval Air Force Atlantic.
The Navy was founded in 1775 by the Continental Congress.
