A Wounding
Each life, as it begins,
wounds another
in some mysterious way:
a leaf may be torn from its tree
a chick may fall from its nest
a careless foot may crush a rose
We cannot fathom its meaning
when it occurs, only that we know
it happens, and while the wound
may heal, resentment will be the sand
it carries to the grave.
